DIAMOND JEWELLERY CAUSES WATER SCARCITY

Another factor that makes diamond jewellery absolutely anti-environment is the fact that it consumes humongous amounts of water. On an average, 1 carat of diamond consumes 2500 litres of water.

Back in 2017, more than 150 million carats of diamonds were extracted. This translates that the consumption of water in 2017 on just diamond extraction is 375,000 million litres of water.

On the other hand, more than 1.1 billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water and more than 2.4 billion face water crises once a month every year. Comparing the water consumption with the acute water scarcity, one can understand how impactful diamond mining is on the planet.

It is a sad irony that Kenya roughly has the same estimate for water consumption for 5 months for its population of over 40 million. And we believe, no one is unaware of the pressing issue of water scarcity in Kenya.

Since most of the diamonds come from Africa, the already water-starved region, it is a no-brainer as to how the diamond mining is affecting the lives of the people so much so that they do not even have safe drinking water.
