The Carbon Footprint of Mined Diamonds

Apart from destroying the ecosystem and shifting huge amounts of soil, the amount of carbon released into the environment for every carat extracted is staggering.

According to estimates, a single carat of diamond releases almost 125 pounds of carbon into the atmosphere, along with 30 pounds of sulphur oxide. When compared with the lab-grown diamonds, the figures are negligible, making the lab-grown diamonds far more desirable and sustainable when seen from the environmental perspective.

This is just about the estimation related to the extraction of the diamond. You can imagine how much carbon is emitted in the entire process, right from extraction to the cutting and polishing of the diamonds and finally when they reach the retail shops after the artisans have converted them into beautiful jewellery.
